Recently I was in the car with my 9 year old Alexa. She turned to me asked me, "mom, how can we always make the right decision". I was taken aback by her inquiry. It did not surprise me as she is an inquisitive child. I thought about how I would answer this loaded question.
I told her we need to measure everything we do with God's word. Proverbs 16:33 reminds us that we make our choices but when we include God he takes control. We need to involve God in all our decisions. We can not make decisions based on emotion or our own merit. We can do nothing alone. I reminded Alexa that we all make bad decisions, we are not perfect.
This made me think about how we are all just one dumb decision away from disaster in our lives. Earlier this month we heard the sad news of the death of Steve McNair. He was an amazing athlete. He was an example to so many young men seeking to follow in his footsteps. He was a husband and a father. All that was cast aside when word of how he died spread.
Steve McNair was not perfect and neither are we. The world has expectations for us, sometimes we choose to live up to them and sometimes we don't. Steve McNair chose to get into a relationship with a woman who was not his wife. He died because of his one dumb decision to give in to temptation, to flirt with a waitress in a restaurant.
We need to remember this tragic incident with our eyes open. We must remember that we are all just one dumb decision away from disaster in our lives or worse, death. We need to remember to include God in our decision making process because on our own we all just one dumb decision away from disaster.
